In the blog post, James Johnston, the VP EMEA at Azul, emphasizes the importance of a strong partnership between FinOps and engineering teams to optimize Java estates in the cloud. FinOps adoption is growing, with a focus on reducing cloud waste and workload optimization. The collaboration between FinOps and engineering teams is crucial to balancing performance and cost efficiency in cloud usage.

As FinOps adoption matures, organizations are prioritizing the reduction of cloud waste and optimizing workloads. The State of FinOps 2025 report highlights the increasing focus on value through optimization, especially as demand for compute resources grows. By streamlining cloud resources at a granular level, organizations can achieve significant cost savings and performance improvements.

To effectively optimize Java application engineering, FinOps teams need to establish transparent rules with engineering teams to manage wasted capacity. Java applications, known for their robustness, can face challenges with warm-up time and scalability. Many organizations tend to over-provision cloud resources for Java estates, leading to inefficiencies that FinOps teams can address.

Encouraging a culture of collaboration between FinOps and engineering teams is essential for driving innovation and optimizing cloud resources in Java environments. By working together closely, organizations can leverage the value of FinOps to reduce cloud waste and enhance performance, similar to the teamwork and collaboration seen in Formula One racing teams. This partnership is key to achieving marginal gains and maximizing the potential of Java assets in the cloud.
