Apple’s head of AI models, Ruoming Pang, has decided to leave the company and join Meta, as reported by Bloomberg. This move highlights Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ongoing efforts to recruit top AI executives for his new AI superintelligence unit.
Pang was responsible for overseeing Apple’s internal team that trained the foundational AI models for Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI functions. Despite Apple’s efforts, their AI models have not matched the capabilities of competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. Apple is even considering using third-party AI models for their upcoming Siri upgrade.
Sources mentioned to Bloomberg that Pang’s departure might signal further changes within Apple’s struggling AI division. However, Pang’s expertise in developing efficient on-device AI models could prove valuable to Meta, where Zuckerberg has been recruiting top talent from various AI companies.
