Anduril Industries, a defense tech startup, has encountered several challenges during the testing of its autonomous weapons systems, as reported by the WSJ. These setbacks include multiple drone boats failing during a Navy exercise off California, an issue with the engine of the unmanned jet fighter Fury, and a test of the Anvil counterdrone system causing a fire in Oregon.
Established in 2017 by Palmer Luckey, Anduril secured $2.5 billion in funding in June with a valuation of $30.5 billion, mainly from Founders Fund. The company has secured various military contracts for developing autonomous aircraft and counter-drone systems.
In addition to the testing challenges, Anduril has faced issues with its Altius loitering drones in Ukraine. Front-line soldiers discovered that the drones crashed and missed targets, leading Ukrainian forces to cease their use in 2024. Anduril maintains that these setbacks are typical in weapon development and that their engineering team is making progress without any underlying technology flaws.
