Oppo A40: Affordable Efficiency

Chinese tech giant Oppo has recently unveiled its latest budget smartphone, the Oppo A40. Priced at just £129 (or under £90 on sale), this device offers a 6.67-inch LCD display, a massive 5,100mAh battery, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen1 processor, and a 50MP rear camera. While the Oppo A40 presents great value for money, it falls short in terms of performance and camera quality, making it a mixed bag for potential buyers.

Design-wise, the Oppo A40 sports a simple yet elegant design, with a plastic chassis and a squircle camera module on the back. The 6.67-inch display features a pin-hole selfie camera and a decent bezel size. The phone’s build quality is impressive for its price, with a durable feel despite lacking advanced protection like Gorilla Glass.

In terms of performance, the Oppo A40 is powered by the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen1 processor and 4GB of RAM, resulting in sluggish performance and slow app loading times. While the 128GB internal storage is adequate for basic usage, the phone struggles with multitasking and intensive tasks.

The camera setup on the Oppo A40 includes a 50MP main rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. While the main camera performs decently in good lighting conditions, it struggles with motion and low-light scenarios. Video recording is limited to 1080p at 30fps, offering average results.

On the battery front, the Oppo A40 shines with its 5,100mAh battery capacity, providing long-lasting usage for casual tasks. However, the lack of a fast charger in the box may hinder quick recharging speeds.

Running on Android 14 with ColorOS 14, the Oppo A40 offers a user-friendly software experience with some bloatware pre-installed. The OS provides customization options and features like face recognition and a sidemounted fingerprint scanner, though performance issues may arise during multitasking.

Overall, the Oppo A40 is a suitable choice for casual users who prioritize affordability and basic functionality. Gamers and power users may find its performance lacking, but for everyday tasks like messaging, calling, and social media, it presents a budget-friendly option. Available in the UK and other regions, the Oppo A40 competes with other budget smartphones like the Oppo A60 5G, Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, Nokia G22, and Motorola Moto G04.
