In a Nutshell

  • Latest Wear OS 6 update now available
  • Only Pixel Watch 2 and 3 compatible
  • New Material 3 Expressive UI design
  • Google Maps auto-launch integration

Today marks the release of the Pixel Watch 4 smartwatch, accompanied by Google’s long-anticipated Wear OS 6 update for older Pixel watches. Our resident tech expert, Chris Martin, has had hands-on experience with the new Pixel Watch 4 and seems to be quite pleased with the latest addition to Google’s smartwatch lineup.

While our final verdict on the Pixel Watch 4 is still pending, here’s a little insider tip: consider updating your existing Pixel Watch to potentially forego the need for purchasing the new model.

Not Everyone is Eligible

Google has officially announced that “All eligible Pixel Watch devices will receive the Wear OS 6 update starting today with the October 2025 software update.”

However, it’s important to note that only the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 are included in the list of compatible devices. Regrettably, the original Pixel Watch released in 2022 seems to have been left out of the update cycle.

Although there was initial hope for the original Pixel Watch to be included in the Wear OS 6 update, it appears that it didn’t make the cut despite being slated for support until October 2025.

What to Expect from Watch OS 6

The latest update introduces Google’s new Material 3 Expressive UI design, a feature that was recently rolled out to their smartphones following the launch of the Pixel 10.

Pixel Watch 2 and 3 users can anticipate larger buttons, rounded fonts, and icons, along with dynamic color theming based on their chosen watch face. Additionally, there are updated tile templates and layouts for a more personalized experience.

One of the standout features of this update is the integration of the Google Maps auto-launch functionality. Simply start navigating on your phone, and the directions seamlessly transfer to your Pixel Watch.

Furthermore, users now have the ability to extend an active Safety Check duration.

To initiate the Wear OS 6 update on your Pixel Watch 2 or 3, head to Settings > System > System updates, in case the update hasn’t already started downloading.

This article delves into the latest developments in Google’s smartwatch ecosystem with the release of the Pixel Watch 4 and the accompanying Wear OS 6 update. Discover what features are in store for Pixel Watch 2 and 3 owners, and learn why the original Pixel Watch might be missing out on the update cycle. Stay informed and make the most of your smartwatch experience!
