Netflix’s adaptation of the popular game was first revealed in 2020 when the streaming service struck a deal with Ubisoft, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed. In July 2025, it was officially confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed TV series was in development, with Roberto Patino and David Wiener serving as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

Patino, known for his work on series such as Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, as well as creating the HBO series DMZ, is set to bring his expertise to the project. Wiener, who previously wrote for Fear the Walking Dead, Brave New World, and Halo, will also be a key figure in the production.

While a previous adaptation of Assassin’s Creed in the form of a 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender received mixed reviews, the expectations for the Netflix series are much higher.

When could the Assassin’s Creed TV series be released?

According to Deadline, production on Netflix’s series is set to begin in Italy in 2026. With the production and post-production processes likely taking a year, along with additional time for marketing and promotion, it is estimated that the Assassin’s Creed TV series could premiere by the end of 2027 at the earliest.

What is the plot of the Assassin’s Creed TV series?

The series will be based on the extensive game series, which spans multiple volumes and spin-offs. The central conflict in the series revolves around the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar.

As the official logline describes, the series will focus on the secret war between these two factions, one seeking control and manipulation for mankind’s future, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series will follow characters through significant historical events as they shape humanity’s destiny.

The Assassins and Templars are in search of powerful artifacts known as Pieces of Eden, with the former advocating for free will and the latter for manipulation. The Knights have developed the Animus, a device that accesses ancestral memories through genetic material.

While no specific details about the plot of the Netflix series have been revealed, it is expected to blend a modern-day storyline with historical elements, possibly exploring original stories or adapting existing games.

There is speculation that the show may take an anthology approach, shifting between different time periods each season. The story of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, featured in Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations, is a strong contender for adaptation, especially considering the series will be filmed in Italy.

With the first season set in Italy, the possibility of focusing on Ezio’s story during the Renaissance period is increasingly likely. The series may also incorporate modern-day events set in Rome, allowing for a mix of historical eras.

Assassin’s Creed series trailer

A brief teaser trailer featuring the game and Netflix logos, accompanied by ‘Ezio’s Family’ playing in the background, has been released. Watch the teaser below:

Who is starring in Assassin’s Creed TV series?

Netflix has confirmed that Toby Wallace, known for his work in Euphoria and Bikeriders, will be part of the series. Wallace’s role in the series has not been disclosed yet.

Who could Toby Wallace play in the Assassin’s Creed TV series?

With filming set in Italy, Wallace could potentially portray Ezio Auditore da Firenze or the present-day protagonist Desmond Miles. While Wallace is not Italian, his versatility as an actor makes him suitable for either role. Playing Desmond could also allow him to explore multiple time periods within the series.

Netflix’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed series has sparked speculation among fans about the mysterious character Wallace. Both Ezio and Desmond bear a striking resemblance, making Wallace easily pass for either of them. Alternatively, he could be a completely new character or even someone like Altair. The anticipation for more details from Netflix is high, and fans will have to wait patiently for any new information that may be revealed in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development in the Assassin’s Creed universe.
