Foldable Faceoff: Motorola Tips vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

Motorola appears to have hinted at the upcoming release of a new large foldable phone to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. The company, owned by Lenovo, has been sending intriguing invites to journalists for CES, including a wooden flip book that transforms into a book-shaped lamp with a red inner light. The unfolding design of the invite suggests that Motorola may be preparing to unveil a new foldable device, with the message “every fold reveals a possibility” and a teaser about unveiling new perspectives at Lenovo Tech World. This could signal the introduction of a new Motorola foldable phone.

And not before time, we’d argue. So far, Motorola has provided the only serious competition to Samsung in the compact flip phone game, most recently with the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra.

We’ve been eager for the company to take the fight to the book-sized foldable field for years now. The company’s way with plush materials and unusually curved designs has already led to something distinctive in the foldable space.

The Razr series isn’t just about looks, either. The use of a larger, front-filling cover screen forced Samsung to finally up its game with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Honor and Huawei have arguably already done that for Samsung in the full-sized foldable space, resulting in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, but there’s still space for Motorola to bring a little of its design opulence to bear. That wooden lamp-book leads us to believe that the company will be continuing its recent experiments with natural finishes, which we’d be all in favour of.

We shouldn’t have long to wait, with the Lenovo Tech World announcement set to take place on 6 January, coinciding with CES.
