Android has been around for nearly two decades, but it continues to face a significant issue. While the latest iteration, Android 16, is accessible on supported Google Pixel and other top smartphones, the update process for older devices remains slow. The distribution data indicates that only 7.5 percent of Android devices currently run on Android 16, despite its launch in June of the previous year. This is an improvement from the 4.5 percent adoption rate of its predecessor, Android 15, in April 2025. The sluggish rollout of Samsung’s Android 15 skin, One UI 7, contributed to this delay on previous-generation Galaxy phones.

Android’s slow adoption rate poses a challenge for users, especially when compared to iOS, where close to 30 percent of supported devices run on iOS 26. The disparity in distribution highlights the impact of delayed updates on Android users. While Android’s fragmented nature makes it challenging to compete with iOS, the lack of timely updates affects current and future Android phone owners.

Anticipating the Arrival of Android 17

The impending release of Android 17 sparks excitement for many, particularly those who stand to benefit directly from its new features. As a user of the latest Pixel 10 Pro XL, I am eager to experience the enhancements that Android 17 will bring. However, the enthusiasm is not shared by all, especially users of third-party Android devices who may face extended wait times for the update.

The disparity in update timelines underscores a common issue: the lack of widespread interest in new Android features until they become available on users’ devices. The exclusivity of certain features to Pixel phones further limits their accessibility to a small fraction of the global market. This discrepancy in feature availability diminishes the overall user experience for many Android users.

Addressing the Challenge of Unsupported Devices

Another pressing concern highlighted by the data is the extensive fragmentation within the Android user base. With over 10 percent of devices still running on previous major versions dating back to Android 11, there is a significant risk of unsupported phones in circulation. This poses security threats as unsupported devices lack essential updates to safeguard against vulnerabilities and malware.

Using an unsupported phone without necessary security patches exposes personal data to potential breaches, emphasizing the importance of using supported devices to mitigate risks. As Google advances with Android 17 development, older device owners may find themselves excluded from critical updates, further underscoring the need for device security over the latest software version.

While the evolution of Android continues with the upcoming Android 17 release, it is essential for users to prioritize device security and functionality over immediate access to the latest features. The disparity in update adoption rates highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the diverse Android user base, emphasizing the importance of making informed decisions regarding device support and security.
