One UI 8: An Overview

  • Samsung is gearing up to launch its next major Android skin for Galaxy phones and tablets
  • Based on Android 16 with numerous enhancements and tweaks
  • Set to debut on Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Z Flip FE

The release of One UI 7 faced challenges for Samsung, leading to delays in its availability on all compatible devices.

However, the focus has now shifted to its successor, One UI 8. Built on Android 16, the new update promises a distinct look and feel compared to Pixel phones.

This significant update brings a host of new features to Samsung Galaxy devices, with the first confirmed devices already announced. If you’re curious about compatibility, release timelines, and expected upgrades, we’ve got you covered.

When Can I Expect One UI 8 on My Samsung Galaxy Phone?

Key Points:

  • Final version to debut on Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Z Flip 7 FE
  • Beta version currently available for Galaxy S25 series only
  • Full rollout expected to span several months

Following Google’s official launch of Android 16 on June 10, the arrival of One UI 8 was uncertain.

However, Samsung has now confirmed that the new Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Z Flip 7 FE will come pre-installed with One UI 8.

A beta version has been accessible since May 28 for Galaxy S25 series phones, but availability for older devices remains unclear.

Historically, Samsung typically takes around two to three months after the official Android release to commence rolling out One UI updates. Speculation suggests the official rollout may begin around August or September.

Once launched, the complete rollout to all compatible devices is anticipated to take a few months, hopefully quicker than the One UI 7 rollout.

Looking ahead, a leak suggests that One UI 8.5 is slated to debut on the Galaxy S26 series in early 2026. However, specific features that may be reserved until then remain unclear.

What Are the New Features in One UI 8?

Key Points:

  • Enhanced customization options
  • Improved animations and smoother visual effects
  • New Galaxy AI features anticipated

Since One UI 8 is based on Android 16, it incorporates many of Google’s new features.

However, Samsung has introduced additional features to One UI 8. Here are some of the highlights.

Enhancements to Stock Apps

The Gallery app now includes a ‘Private’ option separate from others. The ‘Categories’ section in My Files has been revamped with new icons. The Reminders app and Calendar have also received updates, including dedicated tabs.

In Settings, the ‘Battery Protection’ option now offers three modes: Basic, Maximum, and Adaptive.

New Galaxy AI Features

One UI 8 introduces new AI features, some exclusive to specific devices. For instance, features like undocking Browsing Assist and Generative Edit are limited to Galaxy Z Fold models.

Audio Eraser is now integrated into Gallery, Notes, and Voice Recorder, offering real-time removal of unwanted sounds. Now Brief has expanded capabilities, including support for parking spot reminders and wearable battery alerts.

AI can now scan images in the Gallery app and suggest wallpaper options automatically.
