During the Cretaceous era, mosasaurs dominated the oceans as apex predators. A recent discovery of a vertebra fossil by Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) geologist James Starnes revealed the immense size of this ancient sea creature.
Describing the find as belonging to one of the largest mosasaurs, Starnes emphasized the sheer magnitude of the creature, surpassing even land-dwelling dinosaurs in size.
The fossil, measuring over seven inches in width, is attributed to the Mosasaurus hoffmanii species, known for its exceptional size within the mosasaur family.
Starnes estimated the weight of the creature to be around 20,000 pounds, highlighting the colossal nature of this ancient sea monster.
While M. hoffmanii could reach lengths exceeding 50 feet, the MDEQ team believes the vertebrae belonged to a mosasaur measuring approximately 30 feet—a significant size by any standard.
George Phillips, paleontology curator at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, emphasized the intimidating size of the creature, suggesting it would have deterred most people from entering the water had it existed today.
