According to the CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, Gemini, the mobile AI assistant, is poised to become the leading AI assistant on smartphones worldwide by the end of the year. Pichai mentioned that Gemini could potentially be featured on every smartphone globally, including iOS devices, when the new iOS 19 launches later in the year.

Currently, Gemini holds a dominant position as the primary AI assistant on Android, the largest operating system in the world. If it transitions to iOS, Google’s AI will undoubtedly hold a strong presence in the mobile industry.

In contrast, Google’s biggest competitor, ChatGPT, is only partially integrated into Apple’s iOS 18 Apple Intelligence feature set. ChatGPT lacks a presence on Android unless users opt to download the ChatGPT app separately.

Reasons Behind Gemini’s Likely Integration into iOS

Pichai disclosed that discussions have been ongoing with Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, throughout 2024, hinting at a potential AI collaboration by mid-2025. The presence of code in the iOS 18.4 beta earlier this year further supports the possibility of Gemini’s integration into iOS.

Despite Apple’s significant investment in its AI initiatives, past partnerships with Google in areas of expertise have proven beneficial. For instance, Google’s services like YouTube and mapping solutions were previously embedded in Apple devices before Apple developed its own alternatives.

Moreover, Apple’s reliance on Google as the default search engine on Safari underscores the value of strategic partnerships between the two tech giants. A potential integration of Gemini into iOS could signify a similar beneficial collaboration.

Challenges Faced by Apple Intelligence

The potential collaboration between Google and Apple in the AI domain highlights Google’s established dominance in the industry, whereas Apple’s AI initiative, Siri, has faced setbacks and delays. Speculations suggest that Apple might introduce a Siri overhaul with iOS 19 alongside the release of the iPhone 17.

Reports of internal conflicts and management issues within Apple’s AI team post the iPhone 16 launch imply a lack of progress in Apple’s AI development. In contrast, Google’s readiness to integrate Gemini into iOS could provide Apple with much-needed AI capabilities.
