Introducing the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra: The Ultimate Smartphone with Switchable Telephoto Camera
SHARE
Huawei recently unveiled its latest flagship smartphone range, the Pura 80 series, featuring notable camera enhancements and familiar drawbacks. The lineup includes the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra and the Huawei Pura 80 Pro, both building upon the design of the previous Huawei Pura 70 series with a sleeker interpretation of the signature triangular camera module. The Ultra model even flaunts a gold ring around the camera lenses, dubbed as the “dazzling Forward Symbol design.” Additionally, the use of second-generation ‘Crystal Armor Kunlun Glass’ promises significant improvements in scratch resistance and drop protection.

The Pura series has always prioritized top-notch photography, and the Pura 80 series continues this trend. The Pro model boasts a large 1-inch ‘Ultra Lighting Camera’ tailored for exceptional low-light performance, while the Pura 80 Ultra features an ‘Ultra Chroma Camera’ for accurate color reproduction and impressive night shots. Of particular interest is the Pura 80 Ultra’s innovative ‘Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera,’ combining a large sensor with 3.7x and 10x focal lengths, offering remarkable optical zoom capabilities.

Another significant camera upgrade

When it comes to features beyond the camera, both Pura 80 models introduce a new hardware control known as the ‘AI Smart Controls Button,’ providing quick access to the camera, flashlight, or AI lens. This customizable button incorporates a fingerprint sensor for enhanced security, diverging from the trend of integrating it into the display. Moreover, both phones pack a 5170mAh battery, delivering above-average performance. With support for 100W SuperCharge wired charging and 80W wireless charging, the Pura 80 series offers speedy charging solutions.

What other features does the Pura 80 series offer?

Despite these impressive hardware enhancements, Huawei remains cryptic about certain details of the Pura 80 series, such as the processor specifications and software provisions. It is likely that the devices will continue to run on Huawei’s HarmonyOS software, presenting a unique user experience compared to traditional Android systems. While the availability of popular apps in Europe and the US is assured, the software may pose challenges due to direct translations from Chinese to English, potentially leading to confusion for users.

The Ultra model risks embellishing the camera lenses with a gold ring

One of the persistent issues with Huawei phones lies in their software limitations, stemming from Western sanctions that restrict access to the latest ARM-based processors and the Google Play Store. Despite the promising hardware of the Pura 80 series, the absence of essential software components may deter potential buyers. The looming question remains whether the Pura 80 Pro and Pura 80 Ultra can compete with flagship devices like the Snapdragon 8 Elite, given the hurdles users face in running their preferred apps on Huawei devices.

The ongoing challenge with Huawei smartphones

While the hardware of the Pura 80 series shows great potential, the software limitations imposed by sanctions raise concerns about the overall user experience. Huawei’s persistent struggle to offer a seamless software environment may hinder the success of the Pura 80 Ultra and Pura 80 Pro in the competitive smartphone market. Until a hands-on experience with the devices sheds light on their performance, it remains advisable to approach Huawei phones cautiously, considering the software constraints that may limit their functionality.
