A new legislation in the United Kingdom has come into effect, mandating that adult content websites verify the age of their users. This law aims to protect children from being exposed to harmful material online.
The BBC has reported that approximately 6,000 pornographic websites have committed to implementing age verification procedures to comply with the Online Safety Act. However, as of Friday morning, some major sites were not yet requiring age checks.
In addition to age verification, the law also mandates that online platforms take measures to shield children from harmful content. Popular platforms like Reddit, Bluesky, X, and Grindr have started requesting users in the U.K. to verify their age using methods such as selfies or government-issued IDs.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance child protection laws worldwide by normalizing online age verification procedures, as highlighted by Wired. However, some groups, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have raised concerns about the potential threat to online privacy and anonymity posed by these measures.
Despite these safeguards, it is anticipated that some internet users may attempt to circumvent age verification requirements by using fake IDs, images of fictional characters, or VPNs.
