In a recent development, Forrester Research Senior Analyst Dario Maisto raised concerns about Broadcom’s commercial practices in relation to VMware’s acquisition. European organizations are facing challenges due to unilateral price increases and service closures by IT vendors acting as monopolies or oligopolies. Maisto suggested that the implementation of a “Buy European Act” could help promote better competition in the European cloud and IT markets, although it might be a long-term strategy.

Additionally, John Annand, digital infrastructure practice lead at Info-Tech Research Group, highlighted the impact of Broadcom’s changes on cloud provider partners. Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, special pricing deals were discontinued, affecting all cloud provider partners. However, members of CISPE, particularly smaller CSPs, were disproportionately impacted. European clients may face restrictions on purchasing VMware from non-compliant cloud providers starting in October.

As the situation unfolds, it is evident that European organizations are navigating challenges in the cloud and IT markets. While short-term repercussions are being felt, the need for fair competition and compliance with licensing restrictions remains a priority. With ongoing discussions and potential regulatory measures, the landscape of the European cloud market may witness significant changes in the future.
