What Caused MP Materials Stock to Plummet on Monday
SHARE

Summary:
1. MP Materials, the only rare earth mine owner in the U.S., experienced a more than 2% drop in stock price following a downgrade by an analyst.
2. Despite the price target increase, investors focused on the recommendation downgrade, as the company is still expected to incur a net loss this year.
3. The volatile nature of MP Materials’ business due to the ongoing trade war with foreign partners, particularly China, makes it a risky but potentially rewarding investment.

Unique Article:
MP Materials, the exclusive owner of the sole rare earth mine in the United States, faced a setback on the stock market as its shares dipped over 2% after an analyst downgraded the company. The S&P 500 index, on the other hand, only saw a slight 0.3% decrease during the same session. CFRA’s Matthew Miller took a step back from his previous strong buy rating on MP Materials, now rating it as a buy and raising the price target to $88 per share from $68. Despite the optimistic price target adjustment, investors seemed more concerned about the recommendation downgrade, possibly due to Miller’s expectation of a net loss for the company this year.

The unpredictable nature of MP Materials’ business, exacerbated by the current trade tensions with key partners like China, adds a layer of complexity to its investment potential. While Miller anticipates a higher earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) figure for the company this year, projecting $850 million compared to the previous $650 million estimate, MP Materials is still forecasted to operate at a loss of $0.10 per share. This narrower deficit projection is an improvement from the previous $0.36 net loss estimate but still raises concerns among investors.

With the ongoing trade war creating uncertainty in the rare earth market, MP Materials’ position as the only pure-play rare earth company in the U.S. presents both risks and opportunities for investors. The company’s stock remains a subject of interest for those willing to navigate the volatile landscape of the rare earth industry.
