Teraco’s Growth Continues: JB4 Data Centre Expansion in Africa
SHARE

Teraco, a division of Digital Realty and the largest interconnection hub and provider of data centers in Africa, is excited to announce the completion of its expanded JB4 Bredell Campus data center in Ekurhuleni, located east of Johannesburg. This facility offers access to various network service providers, regional IXPs, content delivery networks, cloud service provider on-ramps, and peering opportunities.

Teraco has successfully completed the expansion of its JB4 Bredell Campus data center in Ekurhuleni, making it the largest standalone data center ever built in Africa. With a monumental 30MW expansion, the facility now boasts 50MW of critical IT power load. The expansion includes the addition of 6 new data halls, each capable of supporting 5MW of allocated critical IT power.

The facility is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring a closed-loop chilled water system for free air cooling. AI technology optimizes data hall cooling in real time based on IT load and dispersion, leading to industry-leading Power Usage Effectiveness and reduced energy consumption without using water for ongoing cooling, addressing the region’s water scarcity challenges.

Teraco’s expansion of the JB4 Bredell Campus data center complements its existing data center network in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, following the recent opening of the JB5 Isando facility. This positions Teraco to align with global trends towards cloud and AI-driven services, showcasing South Africa’s growing importance as a technology hub on the continent.

Jan Hnizdo, CEO of Teraco, emphasizes the company’s commitment to expanding capacity across key hubs to support clients in scaling their digital transformation efforts. With a focus on investing in ICT infrastructure, Teraco offers open-access interconnection and world-class data center solutions to its clients.

Key highlights of the expanded JB4 Bredell Campus data center include:

  1. Massive Scale: An 80,000m² structure with a utility power supply of 80MW.
  2. Cutting-edge Environmentally Conscious Designs: Incorporates a zero-water cooling loop for enhanced energy efficiency.
  3. Unparalleled Capacity: The first data center in Africa to provide 5MW of critical IT load within a single data hall.
  4. Strategic Location: Situated in the bustling R21 business corridor for robust connectivity.
  5. Global Standards Compliance: Meets international benchmarks such as ISO and PCI-DSS certifications.

Teraco’s data center platform spans across strategic hubs, including the Isando Campus (70MW), Bredell Campus (64MW), Cape Town (53MW), and Durban (2MW), totaling 189MW of critical power load. The addition of new facilities like JB4 enhances the Platform Teraco ecosystem, providing resilient infrastructure for organizations navigating digital transformations and offering scalable solutions as digital landscapes evolve.
