Seattle’s Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2) had a significant week with the unveiling of a new AI robotics initiative and a groundbreaking grant from Nvidia and the National Science Foundation to spearhead the development of the future AI infrastructure for U.S. scientific research. However, the nonprofit research organization also achieved a milestone by relocating to its new 50,000-square-foot headquarters in Seattle’s first large-scale mass-timber commercial building.

The recent move marks a new chapter for Ai2, situated in the Northlake Commons project on the north shore of Lake Union, serving as the central hub for its team of approximately 225 employees. Occupying one floor of the five-story building, the new space is in close proximity to the University of Washington, where many of Ai2’s researchers are associated with the UW Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering.

Utilizing mass timber, an environmentally friendly engineered wood product, the new headquarters boasts a modern design with visible mass-timber elements integrated throughout the space. Featuring large meeting rooms, private call rooms, a podcast and video studio, and outdoor patios with panoramic views of Lake Union and downtown, the workspace is designed to foster collaboration and innovation among researchers.

Departing from the conventional open-office layout, the interior design emphasizes smaller workstations grouped together to encourage teamwork while maintaining connectivity through walkways and sight lines. Additionally, the Ai2 robotics lab includes a simulated home environment with two kitchens, enabling researchers to test AI robotics technology in real-world settings.

Designed by Seattle-based architect Weber Thompson and constructed by general contractor Swinerton, Northlake Commons embodies Ai2’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The relocation to the new headquarters signifies a pivotal moment for the organization as it continues to drive advancements in artificial intelligence research.
