Introducing Bounce, a groundbreaking technology that enhances the open social web experience, officially launching to the public on Monday. This innovative cross-protocol migration tool enables users of open social networks like Bluesky and Mastodon to seamlessly transfer their follow graphs between accounts, bridging the gap between networks with different underlying protocols.
Discover Bounce, a game-changing technology that revolutionizes the open social web, now available to the public. This cutting-edge tool facilitates seamless migration of follow graphs between open social networks, such as Bluesky and Mastodon, despite their distinct underlying protocols.
Currently, dissatisfied Mastodon users have the option to relocate their accounts to a different Mastodon server, while Bluesky is actively developing technology to enable users to migrate their accounts to a new PDS (Personal Data Server) on its network. However, the disparity in protocols, with Mastodon operating on the ActivityPub Protocol and Bluesky on the AT Protocol, has previously hindered seamless account migration between these platforms.
Bounce leverages technology initially pioneered for Bridgy Fed, a tool that connects Mastodon and Bluesky by integrating users’ profiles across both services. The migration process involves transitioning a user’s Bluesky account to a bridged account spanning both networks before finalizing the move to the user’s Mastodon account. This migration functionality also extends to Pixelfed, an ActivityPub-based social application akin to Instagram.
At its launch, Bounce facilitates the migration of users from Bluesky to Mastodon or Pixelfed, with plans to enable migration in the opposite direction once Bluesky’s infrastructure supports outbound migrations. It’s crucial for early adopters to note that transitioning their account from Bluesky means forfeiting the ability to use Bluesky credentials to access the app or other AT Protocol-based services in the future.
Developed by the nonprofit organization A New Social, the creators of Bridgy Fed, Bounce’s debut comes at a critical juncture for Bluesky users in Mississippi. Following Bluesky’s decision to block its service in the state due to regulatory concerns, users are left without access to the platform, underscoring the necessity for tools like Bounce that empower users to relocate their accounts seamlessly.

The beta version of Bounce will be accessible to early adopters and open web enthusiasts starting Monday, inviting users to test the service and provide feedback. While the platform is open to the public, users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the migration process before transitioning their accounts, as returning to Bluesky after migration is currently not supported.
