In a groundbreaking development set to revolutionize Gibraltar’s digital landscape, Pelagos Data Centres recently announced plans for a state-of-the-art facility that will have the capacity to deliver up to 250 megawatts by 2033. Strategically located on a 20,000 square meter site near the Port of Gibraltar, this project is slated to become Gibraltar’s most extensive undertaking to date, with a staggering investment of £1.8 billion.

Discover how Pelagos Data Centres is spearheading a transformative initiative to elevate Gibraltar’s digital infrastructure with a cutting-edge facility, poised to meet the growing demand for data centers driven by AI advancements.

The venture, supported by both private investors and the Government of Gibraltar, will position the territory as a vital hub for Europe’s digital network, capable of accommodating the increasing need for data storage and processing capabilities. Construction will be carried out in phases, with the initial phase expected to be operational by the end of 2027, followed by subsequent stages every 18 months. Sustainability is a key focus of the project, with plans to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2030 through the utilization of renewable energy sources and LNG.

One of the unique aspects of this development is the inclusion of a public leisure amenity for the local community, enhancing the project’s overall appeal. Additionally, the facility is designed to operate independently from Gibraltar’s existing power grid and aims to achieve a remarkable Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of approximately 1.2.

The project is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities, with 500 construction roles and 100 permanent positions expected to stimulate the region’s employment market. Pelagos Data Centres is dedicated to enhancing local skills through comprehensive staff training and recruitment initiatives.

Adhering to Tier III standards, the facility will offer a carrier-neutral environment known for its high availability and reliability. It will also strive to attain prestigious international certifications in various areas, such as information security and environmental sustainability.

With its scale and ambition, this project represents the most substantial infrastructure investment in Gibraltar since the early 1990s, reaffirming the territory’s status as a center for technological and economic innovation.

A technical briefing is scheduled for early 2026 to provide detailed insights into the intricate design and execution of the infrastructure, aligning with the project’s upcoming construction commencement.
