Ensuring Reliable Power: Why Data Centers Should Have Their Own Power Supply, According to US Grid Watchdog

In a recent report by the independent watchdog Monitoring Analytics, data centers seeking to connect to the largest US grid are now required to provide their own power supply. This new mandate comes as a response to the grid’s limited capacity and the increasing power demands of data centers across 13 states.

The watchdog’s stance has shifted since its previous warning, now recommending that large data centers must have their own generation capabilities. This change reflects the strain on the PJM Interconnection LLC grid, which has been struggling to meet the escalating power needs of data centers in the region.

With the grid already experiencing challenges due to the surge in power demand from data centers, the watchdog’s report emphasizes the urgency of addressing this issue before it leads to significant costs for consumers and other PJM customers.

PJM Interconnection LLC acknowledged the imbalance between supply and demand, attributing it to the unprecedented growth in electricity usage. The grid operator is collaborating with stakeholders to find solutions to this pressing issue.
