Snap, the company known for its social media platform and AR glasses, has unveiled Snap OS 2.0, the latest iteration of its smart glasses software. I recently had the opportunity to test out this new software at Snap’s London offices, giving me a glimpse of what to expect from their upcoming consumer-ready smart glasses set to launch in 2026.

Back in 2016, Snap made a significant shift by introducing the original Snap Spectacles, marking a departure from its software-centric focus. The Spectacles allowed users to capture the world from their perspective and share it with others. Over the years, Snap has continued to refine its smart glasses, transitioning from a camera-centric design to a more advanced, self-contained computer integrated with AR capabilities.

With the introduction of Snap OS 2.0, the company has further enhanced the user experience, focusing on features like Connected Sessions, Spotlight, Browser, and Gallery. One standout feature I experienced was the Connected Sessions, which enabled seamless collaboration in augmented reality environments. This feature has the potential to revolutionize local collaboration and multiplayer gaming experiences.

Additionally, Snap OS 2.0 boasts powerful AI sound and vision capabilities, allowing users to interact with the world around them in innovative ways. From receiving instructions on performing tricks to translating text in real-time, the AI features add a new dimension to the AR experience.

Despite the impressive technological advancements, one area that still needs improvement is the form factor of the Spectacles. While the hardware components have been packed efficiently, the design of the glasses could be more streamlined for better comfort and aesthetics.

Overall, Snap’s Snap OS 2.0 showcases the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AR technology. As we anticipate the release of the new Spectacles in 2026, there is much excitement surrounding the potential of this innovative smart glasses platform. Stay tuned for more updates on Snap’s AR journey!
