Being a technology writer, I often encounter the challenge of demonstrating products on camera. The struggle lies in the need to use my hands to operate these products, making filming a difficult task. While tripods are an option, maneuvering them between myself and the product is cumbersome, and carrying them around is not ideal.
As a tech journalist, I often find myself needing to showcase products to the camera.
The problem is, you need your hands to use these products, and that makes it very hard to film. Of course, you could use a tripod, but it’s an awkward dance positioning the tripod in between you and the product, not to mention the fact that it’s a bulky bit of kit that I’d rather not have to carry.
That’s where the Neewer Neck Mount comes in. I can’t take credit for this discovery. I saw fellow tech writer Basil Kronfli using it at a press event and immediately knew I needed to get my hands on one. I ordered it at the first opportunity, and it’s safe to say this gizmo has not disappointed.
The Neewer Neck Mount is worn like a necklace, and it has a quick-release shackle to make it easy to take on and off. It’s made from a flexible rubberised material that’s semi-rigid and holds its shape. This means it doesn’t flop about like a lanyard would, even with the weight of a camera on the end.
There are a few different manufacturers that make essentially the same product, but the reason I like the Neewer option is that it comes with both a MagSafe-compatible phone mount and a GoPro-style mount. This means I can use it with any phone that has a magnetic case, any action camera, and even my DJI Osmo Pocket 3, with the appropriate adapter attached.
The main thing that made me fall in love with this mount is that it’s easy. Filming things can be a real hassle, and the less friction between setting up your shot and hitting record, the better. With this mount, you just pop it around your neck, magnetically attach a phone, and start shooting. The result is a stable POV shot with a very natural perspective, making it perfect for hands-on demonstrations.

Of course, there are plenty of other activities where a mount like this would come in handy, too. For example, maybe you’re into woodworking or painting miniatures; a product like this is the perfect way to showcase your handiwork.
Another great thing about this neck mount is that it’s easy to carry. It weighs next to nothing, it’s flexible, so you can scrunch it up to make it smaller, and the quick-release shackle means it can be easily hung from a backpack strap if you’re short on space.
For my needs, it’s easily one of the most useful camera accessories I’ve invested in recently, and at just £35, it’s very affordable. If you’re looking to create content that needs a hands-on perspective, this accessory is a must-have.
