Nvidia’s recent endeavor in the UK involves a massive investment of $15 billion to introduce 300,000 top-tier GPUs and construct data centers globally in collaboration with AI infrastructure companies Nscale and CoreWeave. London-based Nscale is set to enhance the UK’s GPU landscape by deploying 60,000 Blackwell GPUs, aiming to reach a total of 120,000 GPUs by 2026, establishing the UK as the leading GPU concentration in Europe. Additionally, Nscale will extend its GPU deployments to other regions to support the development of sovereign AI infrastructure within various countries.
US-based CoreWeave has also revealed a substantial $2 billion investment, forming part of a larger $3.4 billion UK investment in AI infrastructure utilizing Nvidia GPUs in partnership with Scotland’s DataVita.
### Big Tech’s AI Power Play
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are working on a significant AI investment venture in the UK, as reported by Bloomberg. OpenAI’s involvement in the Tuesday announcement was confirmed by Nvidia, with the ChatGPT founder collaborating with the companies involved.
David Hogan, Nvidia’s vice president of enterprise for the EMEA region, emphasized the essential role of AI as a form of national infrastructure, comparable to energy and telecommunications. He stated that every country requires sovereign AI, leading to the construction of AI infrastructure to produce valuable resources, similar to national electric grids.
The recent surge in AI investments also includes Google’s unveiling of a $6.8 billion investment in the UK to support the development of AI infrastructure.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed these investments, highlighting their potential to create jobs, drive economic growth, and strengthen the UK-US tech relationship. Starmer believes that these investments will propel the UK to become a global leader in AI, resulting in increased job opportunities, investments, improved financial situations, and enhanced public services.
### The AI Gold Rush
The flurry of announcements in the data center industry coincides with US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK and signifies a global AI arms race among nations striving to establish their AI strategies locally.
Nscale is planning to deploy 300,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in AI facilities across the US, Portugal, and Norway. The company recently partnered with Aker and OpenAI to introduce “Stargate Norway,” a 100,000 Nvidia GPU AI Gigafactory in Kvandal, Norway, powered by renewable energy sources. Nscale’s expansion plans also include new data center sites in Ohio and Texas, along with additional sites in Europe.
Moreover, Nscale and Microsoft have announced their collaboration to build the UK’s most powerful supercomputer in Loughton, featuring 24,000 Nvidia GPUs for Microsoft Azure services.
