Seattle’s diverse neighborhoods and vibrant culture kept me busy exploring every corner of the city. From the bustling streets of Capitol Hill to the serene waters of Lake Union, Seattle’s charm never failed to captivate me. The city’s unique blend of technology and nature created a dynamic backdrop for my summer internship at GeekWire.

As a reporting intern, I had the opportunity to dive headfirst into Seattle’s tech scene. From covering AI in schools to exploring agricultural tech innovations, every assignment pushed me to learn more about the intersection of technology and society. One particularly memorable experience was meeting Jenny Quinn, the executive director of the Seattle Universal Math Museum, who shared her vision for a physical math museum in the city.

Working alongside seasoned reporters like Lisa Stiffler and Kurt Schlosser taught me valuable lessons about storytelling and journalism. From writing about WSU’s strawberry-picking robot to touring Recompose, Seattle’s human composting funeral home, each story broadened my understanding of the diverse topics GeekWire covers.

But my time in Seattle wasn’t just about work. Living in a Fremont hostel and dog-sitting in Queen Anne allowed me to immerse myself in the city’s vibrant neighborhoods. From sampling Thai cuisine to strolling through the Sunday market, Seattle’s eclectic mix of food and culture never failed to surprise me.

As I reflect on my summer internship at GeekWire, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore Seattle’s tech landscape and vibrant community. The city’s unique blend of innovation and nature has left a lasting impression on me, and I look forward to carrying these experiences with me as I continue my journey in journalism.

Discovering the quieter, more neighborhood-friendly side of Seattle through leisurely walks with Otis, the beloved dog of GeekWire co-founder John Cook’s brother, and evenings spent admiring the city’s skyline from Kerry Park was a delightful experience. From witnessing stunning sunsets at Golden Gardens to exploring the beauty of Mount Rainier through hiking, my time in Seattle was filled with memorable moments.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to delve into the world of AI in journalism, utilizing innovative tools like Otter.ai for transcriptions and ChatGPT for writing feedback. Participating in Jessica’s “Hacks & Snacks” workshop shed light on how AI can streamline administrative tasks, showcasing the evolving landscape of the industry I aspire to be a part of. The integration of AI in journalism is not just a trend but a transformative force that journalists must adapt to and embrace.

Seattle, with its blend of activism, cultural events, and scenic beauty, offered a diverse and enriching experience. From covering protests to attending music festivals, my time in the city left a lasting impression on me. I am grateful for the connections made and the knowledge gained throughout my summer internship journey.
