G20 Summit: UK Government Boosts Tech Innovation

The United Kingdom Government has shown its support for new artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives in various African countries, endorsing the G20 ‘AI for Africa Initiative’ which was recently announced in Cape Town. The goal of this initiative is to foster the responsible and inclusive use of AI innovations throughout the continent.

Backing African-Led AI Projects for Development

The UK Government, through AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, recognizes the potential of AI to drive progress, instill trust, and improve livelihoods. By championing African-led innovation that prioritizes people’s needs, addresses real-world issues, and promotes global resilience, the UK aims to make AI safer, fairer, and more accessible in collaboration with countries like South Africa.

AI Evidence Alliance for Social Impact: Promoting Tech for Good

As part of the AI for Africa Initiative, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has joined forces with Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Community Jameel to launch the AI Evidence Alliance for Social Impact (AEASI). This £2.75 million initiative focuses on leveraging AI for social good in Africa, with the aim of providing evidence-based insights on impactful AI solutions and enhancing local research capabilities.

Addressing Safety and Security Concerns in AI

Establishing the African Hub for AI Safety, Security, and Peace at the University of Cape Town marks a significant step in mitigating the risks associated with AI in the region. Supported by the UK-Canada AI for Development programme, this hub will empower African researchers, policymakers, and communities to address AI-related challenges, develop tailored governance frameworks, engage with the local community, and actively participate in shaping global AI regulations.
