October is a critical month for cybersecurity awareness, with the challenges facing the data center industry becoming more complex than ever. As federal funding for cybersecurity resources gets slashed, organizations are left grappling with resource constraints at a time when they need support the most. Additionally, the rapid advancement of AI is fueling the cybersecurity arms race, giving both attackers and defenders powerful new tools to use.

Since its inception in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month has aimed to educate Americans about online threats and promote best security practices. Fast forward to 2025, and the data center industry has become adept at foundational security measures such as password management, patching vulnerabilities, and keeping software up to date. However, there are still threats that remain under the radar, particularly those impacting the digital infrastructure sector.

One of the most pressing concerns raised by cybersecurity experts is the vulnerability of supply chains and dependencies. Leslie Daigle from Global Cyber Alliance warns that every provider in a supply chain could be a potential backdoor for cybercriminals. A single weak link could have far-reaching consequences, affecting entire industries and bringing sectors to a standstill.

Organizations heavily rely on external providers, from third-party integrations to software supply chains. These dependencies, while crucial for efficiency, introduce significant risks that attackers can exploit. Third-party integrations, such as APIs, often lack sufficient security vetting, leaving organizations vulnerable to attacks.

The visibility problem extends beyond APIs to software components that power modern applications. Anirudh Batra from CloudSEK highlights the risks of hidden vulnerabilities in software dependency trees, emphasizing the need for a cautious approach to external dependencies.

Malicious traffic and route leaks are also significant risks that organizations face. Outbound traffic can harm an organization’s reputation and lead to infrastructure blocklisting. Daigle recommends proactive measures to secure networks, including implementing MANRS (Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security) actions.

AI voice cloning poses a growing threat, with vishing (voice phishing) attacks becoming increasingly common. Mark Frost from NCC Group warns that the tools for AI voice cloning are readily available to the public, making it easier for attackers to impersonate individuals and manipulate employees.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve and grow in complexity, organizations must remain vigilant and stay ahead of the curve to protect their data and infrastructure. Employees unknowingly sharing confidential data through AI tools or personal assistants can create new leakage channels that organizations may not be equipped to monitor effectively. Attackers also weaponize remote monitoring and management software to gain unauthorized access, posing a significant security risk. Furthermore, gradual changes within organizations, such as misconfigurations and dormant accounts, can lead to security vulnerabilities. Shadow SaaS usage by employees introduces additional risks by handling sensitive data outside of corporate controls. Despite these evolving threats, focusing on fundamental security defenses remains crucial for building resilience against cyber attacks. Implementing multi-factor authentication and other core security practices can help organizations strengthen their defenses against both traditional and emerging threats.
