Johnson Controls Enhances Data Centre Efficiency with Strategic Investment in Accelsius

In a bid to revolutionize the data centre industry, Johnson Controls has recently announced a significant strategic investment in Accelsius, a leading provider of two-phase, direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology. This cutting-edge approach leverages phase change from liquid to vapor to improve heat extraction efficiency while reducing energy consumption.

Efficient cooling is vital for data centres to ensure optimal chip performance, which is essential for the smooth operation of our digital economy. However, traditional cooling systems can consume up to 40% of a data centre’s total energy consumption, creating a pressing need for energy-efficient and sustainable cooling solutions.

Austin Domenici, Vice President and General Manager at Johnson Controls Global Data Center Solutions, emphasizes the importance of cooling innovation in meeting the growing demands of high-density data centres. He states, "Our mission is to lead the industry in energy efficiency, driving innovation throughout the cooling process to meet the evolving needs of the market."

Accelsius CEO Josh Claman highlights the benefits of their two-phase, direct-to-chip cooling solutions, which offer a 35% reduction in operational expenditure compared to traditional methods. This innovative approach caters to the demands of power-dense AI and HPC workloads, providing a cost-effective and sustainable cooling solution for data centres.

Johnson Controls’ commitment to innovation is further exemplified by their YORK® YVAM magnetic bearing chiller, which boasts a 40% reduction in annual power consumption and zero on-site water usage. Additionally, the Silent-Aire Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) platform offers scalable cooling capacities, enabling data centre owners to enhance overall facility efficiency and reduce non-IT energy consumption by over 50%.

With these groundbreaking technologies and strategic investments, Johnson Controls is at the forefront of driving efficiency and sustainability in the data centre industry, paving the way for a more sustainable digital future.
