3. The merging of AI and geospatial intelligence opens up various use cases across industries, providing developers with a customizable tool to create unique experiences for users.

Article:
Google has rolled out an exciting new feature for developers leveraging its Gemini AI models, offering them the ability to incorporate real-time geospatial data from Google Maps into their applications. This groundbreaking addition allows developers to enhance user experiences by providing detailed and location-specific responses to queries, such as business hours, reviews, and venue atmosphere. By tapping into a vast database of over 250 million places, developers can now create more intelligent and responsive location-aware applications.

This integration of AI and geospatial intelligence is particularly valuable for applications where proximity, real-time availability, or location-specific personalization are essential, such as local search, delivery services, real estate, and travel planning. With the ability to pass latitude and longitude data into requests, developers can significantly enhance the quality of responses based on the user’s location.

The new feature is accessible through Google AI Studio, where developers can explore a live demo powered by the Gemini Live API. Models supporting the grounding with Google Maps feature include Gemini 2.5 Pro, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 2.0 Flash. In a demo showcasing Italian restaurant recommendations in Chicago, the assistant leveraged Maps data to retrieve top-rated options and provide accurate business details.

Developers can also embed a Google Maps widget in their app’s user interface by retrieving a context token. This interactive component displays photos, reviews, and other familiar content typically found in Google Maps. Integration is seamless through the generateContent method in the Gemini API, where developers can include googleMaps as a tool and enable a Maps widget by setting parameters in the request.

The Maps grounding tool supports various practical use cases across industries, such as itinerary generation, personalized local recommendations, and detailed location queries. To optimize performance and cost, developers are advised to enable the tool only when geographic context is relevant, as pricing starts at $25 per 1,000 grounded prompts.

Developers can combine Grounding with Google Maps with Grounding with Google Search in the same request, allowing them to provide both factual data from Maps and broader context from web content. This combination leads to significantly improved response quality, according to internal testing by Google.

The experience is highly customizable, with developers able to tweak system prompts, choose from different Gemini models, and configure voice settings. The API returns structured metadata that developers can use to build inline citations or verify AI-generated outputs, promoting transparency and trust in user-facing applications. Google requires Maps-based sources to be clearly attributed and linked back to the source using their URI.

For technical teams integrating this capability, Google recommends passing user location context when known, displaying Google Maps source links beneath relevant content, enabling the tool only when geographic context is clear, and monitoring latency to disable grounding when performance is critical. Grounding with Google Maps is globally available but restricted in certain territories and not permitted for emergency response use cases.

Grounding with Google Maps is now generally available through the Gemini API, allowing developers to create AI-driven applications that understand and respond to the world around them. This latest release from Google further expands the capabilities of the Gemini API, empowering developers to build innovative and impactful applications for users worldwide.
