Amazon has partnered with micromobility startup Also, a spinoff of Rivian, to supply the e-commerce giant with pedal-assist cargo quad vehicles capable of carrying over 400 pounds of packages. The collaboration aims to customize these vehicles to meet Amazon’s delivery requirements in Europe and the United States, with the launch set for 2026.
Under the multi-year agreement, Also will work closely with Amazon to tailor the pedal-assist vehicles to fit the company’s delivery needs. The TM-Q electric quads are designed to navigate bike lanes efficiently and effectively transport packages to urban areas. This initiative stems from the close relationship between Also’s team and Amazon, leveraging expertise gained from Rivian’s electric delivery van program.
Originating as a project within Rivian, Also recently emerged as an independent entity with substantial funding from Eclipse Ventures. While maintaining ties with Rivian, Also benefits from the automaker’s technology, retail network, and economies of scale. The collaboration between Also and Amazon underscores the seamless coordination facilitated by Rivian’s involvement as a major shareholder.
The TM-Q quad vehicles and the TM-B ebike share common features, such as a pedal-by-wire system developed by Also and a user-friendly touchscreen interface for navigation and vehicle management. Additionally, the vehicles utilize similar battery technology, with the quad cargo vehicles featuring enhanced power capacity for commercial applications.
Unlike traditional consumer ebikes, the TM-Q quad vehicles are tailored for commercial use, integrating specialized software for logistics, delivery, and charging management. Amazon’s Global Fleet Director, Emily Barber, highlights the quad’s compact size and pedal-assist system as ideal for urban package delivery, with Amazon already operating over 70 micromobility hubs in various cities.
While Amazon will be a primary customer for the TM-Q vehicles, Also plans to introduce a consumer version without the delivery van attachment. This consumer model offers ample space for passengers or cargo, reflecting the versatility of the underlying quad platform. Furthermore, future iterations of the quad vehicles are anticipated, showcasing the platform’s adaptability for diverse applications.
