Elon Musk and Sam Altman continue their ongoing feud on Musk’s social media platform X.
Despite being co-founders at OpenAI, where Altman serves as CEO, the two have been engaged in a public battle through social media, legal disputes, and corporate communications. The latest clash started when Altman shared a series of screenshots documenting his attempt to cancel a reservation for a Tesla Roadster he made in 2018, expressing frustration over the extended delay in receiving the car and requesting a refund of his $50,000 deposit.
Altman expressed his disappointment, stating, “I really was excited for the car! And I understand delays. But 7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait.”
The Roadster, initially announced in November 2017, has faced multiple delays, with Musk recently teasing a new version to be unveiled by the end of this year. Musk responded to Altman’s post by accusing him of misappropriating a nonprofit, a claim he has made before through various channels, including legal actions and acquisition attempts aimed at thwarting OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit entity.
Musk’s involvement in a competing AI startup, xAI, has further escalated tensions, with lawsuits filed against OpenAI and Apple alleging anti-competitive practices. Altman countered Musk’s accusations, highlighting his alleged manipulation of X to favor his own ventures and undermine competitors and adversaries.
In a recent exchange, Musk pointed out that Altman failed to disclose that the refund issue was promptly resolved within 24 hours, suggesting a partial account of the situation was presented. The ongoing animosity between the two tech figures continues to unfold across various platforms, showcasing their diverging views and business strategies.
