With the increasing demand for computing power and infrastructure driven by technologies like AI, data centres are becoming more essential than ever. However, this growth comes at a cost, as data centres are responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions.

To address the energy consumption and emissions of data centres, heat recovery strategies are gaining traction. By utilizing wasted heat from data centres to heat nearby buildings, technologies such as heat pumps and district networks offer a sustainable solution. Countries like Germany and the UK are already implementing regulations to improve the energy efficiency of data centres, setting standards for power usage effectiveness and heat re-use.

Heat recovery not only helps reduce energy consumption but also supports the transition to low carbon heating in homes and businesses. By repurposing the heat output of data centres through technologies like heat pumps and district heating networks, we can significantly decrease the environmental impact of these facilities. Implementing these strategies can pave the way for a more sustainable future and accelerate progress towards achieving net zero emissions.
