South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust Enhances Digital Infrastructure with Modular Data Centres
South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust recently invested £1.4 million in a project to upgrade its digital infrastructure by installing two external modular data centres. The initiative aimed to improve energy efficiency and reliability within the Trust’s operations.
The Trust collaborated with Innovate Healthcare Services, DataCentre UK, and Schneider Electric to implement the project. The new modular data centres replaced outdated server rooms and introduced modern racks, cooling systems, power distribution units, and battery backup systems.
According to Paul Almond, Managing Director at DataCentre UK, the company incorporated Schneider Electric’s pre-engineered data centre components into the design. Almond highlighted the scalability and configurability of the solutions, which encompass racks, power systems, cooling mechanisms, and management tools.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
The Trust anticipates significant energy savings with the new facilities compared to its previous setup. Mike Conlon, Associate Director of Technology Services at Innovate Healthcare Services, emphasized the sustainability aspect of the investment. The updated infrastructure is designed to consume 60% less electricity for the same IT load, with an expected annualized Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2.
Given the increasing reliance on digital platforms in healthcare settings, transitioning to purpose-built data centres is crucial for enhancing resilience and supporting future digital service expansions while minimizing energy consumption.
Government Initiatives and Cost Reduction
Amidst governmental pressures to reduce carbon emissions, efficiency projects like the one undertaken by South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust play a vital role in achieving sustainability goals. The Trust’s initiative aligns with broader efforts to cut energy costs and carbon footprints within the healthcare sector.
By optimizing energy usage and investing in innovative infrastructure, the Trust aims to not only reduce operational costs but also ensure reliable service delivery for patients and staff. The ongoing maintenance agreements and service support further enhance the efficiency and performance of the data centres.
Scalability and Future-Proofing
With both modular data centres now operational, the Trust is well-positioned to scale its digital services in response to increasing demand. Continuous monitoring and performance tracking enable the Trust to optimize efficiency and adapt to evolving technological requirements effectively.
Overall, the investment in modular data centres reflects South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and technological advancement in healthcare service delivery.
