In a recent agreement, Downing Renewable Developments has committed to constructing and managing a 40MW solar farm to power Kao Data’s colocation campus in Harlow, enhancing the site’s sustainability efforts and reducing its carbon footprint. This initiative marks a significant step for Kao Data, as it opts for a ground-mounted private-wire solar PV system to directly supply power to its data centre campus, following the lead of industry giants known for their eco-friendly practices.

Unlike traditional colocation facilities that rely on grid-connected renewables, Kao Data’s decision to establish a dedicated private-wire connection to a solar farm signals a shift towards sustainable energy solutions in the data centre industry. By choosing this path, the company aims to address challenges related to high electricity prices, grid connection delays, and the need for long-term cost stability, ultimately positioning itself as a proactive ‘prosumer’ in the renewable energy landscape.

The partnership between Kao Data and Downing represents a strategic move towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, with the former securing renewable electricity through a power purchase agreement (PPA) from the newly developed solar farm. This collaboration not only supports Kao Data’s sustainability goals but also underscores the growing importance of integrated clean energy solutions in the digital infrastructure sector. Downing’s expertise in renewable energy deployment, coupled with Kao Data’s commitment to green power procurement, sets a precedent for future energy-efficient initiatives within the data centre industry.
