Verizon is in the process of laying off around 168 employees in Washington state, affecting a range of roles including analysts, engineers, and retail workers.

The recent layoffs at Verizon in Washington state have impacted a variety of positions, including analysts, engineers, and retail workers. The company disclosed the layoffs through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state’s Employment Security Department. These job cuts are expected to take effect on Jan. 23.

According to a statement from Eboni Gregoire, Verizon’s director of HR operations, the company is undergoing consolidation and restructuring efforts to optimize its facilities and resources. This move comes amidst reports that Verizon is planning to cut a total of 15,000 jobs, with a focus on transitioning some of its stores into franchised outlets.

As part of this restructuring, five facilities in Redmond, Renton, Woodinville, Spokane, and Bellingham are being divested to an agent and will no longer be operated by Verizon. The fate of these sites, whether they will close or become franchises, remains unclear.

Approximately 22 of the affected employees are based at a corporate office in Bellevue, which Verizon acquired from T-Mobile the previous year. T-Mobile sublet space to Verizon at 90 North, a building located at 3255 160th Ave. SE. This move comes at a time when Verizon has experienced a loss of 7,000 phone subscribers in the recent quarter, while competitors like AT&T and T-Mobile have been gaining customers.

In response to the layoffs, T-Mobile announced a new initiative called “Switching Made Easy” aimed at helping Verizon and AT&T customers transition to T-Mobile within a short span of 15 minutes. This initiative reflects the increasing competition in the telecommunications industry and the efforts of companies to attract and retain customers.
