Embracing Sustainability: atNorth’s Circular Economy Model at Iceland Data Centre

Icelandic company atNorth has been recognized by Data Center Dynamics for its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of data center operations. The expansion of its ICE03 data center in Akureyri, Iceland, impressed judges with its design and commitment to promoting long-term sustainable growth.

atNorth’s ICE03 data center in Akureyri, Iceland, has been honored with a Data Center Dynamics award for its outstanding environmental impact reduction efforts. The facility’s design, which incorporates renewable energy sources and energy-efficient cooling systems, caught the attention of the judges, who commended its contribution to social and economic development in the region. ICE03 utilizes Direct Liquid Cooling technology and sustainable construction materials, such as laminated wood Glulam and local rockwool insulation, to minimize its environmental footprint.

All of atNorth’s new data centers, including ICE03, are equipped with heat reuse systems that redirect waste heat to the local municipality of Akureyri. This partnership not only reduces the data center’s carbon footprint but also supports a community greenhouse that educates local school groups on sustainable food production. By embracing environmentally-friendly practices, atNorth’s clients can decarbonize their IT workloads and contribute to the region’s circular economy.

With a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.2, ICE03 operates in an environmentally responsible manner, surpassing the global average PUE of 1.56. This ensures that high-performance workloads can be run efficiently, aligning with the growing demand for eco-conscious data center solutions.

Furthermore, atNorth’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond its operational practices. The company’s local hiring initiatives, support for community projects, and investments in vocational training demonstrate a holistic approach to fostering thriving communities. By prioritizing long-term partnerships and community engagement, atNorth sets a positive example for data center operators worldwide.

As the demand for sustainable computing solutions continues to rise, atNorth’s innovative approach sets a benchmark for the industry, showcasing the potential for eco-friendly data center operations to drive positive social and economic impact.
