Ireland Lifts Ban on New Power Links for Data Centers

Ireland recently ended a ban on new data centers connecting to the electricity grid in Dublin, providing much-needed clarity for the industry. The updated policy mandates that data centers must have on-site generation or battery systems to meet their electricity needs and contribute power back to the grid when necessary.

The decision to lift the ban comes after a surge in electricity demand from data centers led to concerns about potential blackouts. With Ireland being a key data center hub in Europe, the freeze on new connections had drawn criticism for hindering infrastructure development in the AI sector. The new framework also emphasizes the importance of renewable energy sources, requiring at least 80% of a facility’s electricity demand to come from such projects. Utilities will need to provide updates on their capacity for new connections, while operators must report on renewable energy use and carbon emissions.

Additionally, the government is working on legislation to allow data centers and other large energy users to generate their own power independently of the grid, a move that could further enhance sustainability in the sector. These developments signal a positive shift in the data center industry in Ireland, paving the way for continued growth and innovation.
