Formula 1 has recently implemented the cutting-edge Lenovo Neptune Liquid Cooling system in its technology infrastructure. This innovative technology, in line with the sport’s sustainability goals, aims to enhance performance by up to 40% while improving energy efficiency. This strategic partnership involves incorporating Lenovo’s Neptune solution into ThinkSystem SD665-N V3 servers, which efficiently dissipate heat at the processor level using warm water. By reducing the power required for cooling dense computing infrastructures, Formula 1 can now handle more intensive data and AI workloads without a significant increase in energy consumption.

This collaboration with Lenovo represents a significant step forward for Formula 1’s technological capabilities. Dr. Tolga Kurtoglu, CTO at Lenovo, emphasizes the impact of this cooling innovation on strengthening Formula 1’s technological backbone. By enabling the scalability of broadcast operations while upholding energy efficiency and sustainability standards, Lenovo’s Neptune Liquid Cooling system is set to revolutionize Formula 1’s technological landscape.

As part of their longstanding Global Partnership, Lenovo provides essential infrastructure support to Formula 1, serving over 600 employees with a range of resources, from AI laptops to Motorola smartphones. These resources facilitate global collaboration, enabling the sport to reach over 1.6 billion viewers annually.

Formula 1’s trackside Event Technical Centre (ETC) collects vast amounts of data at each racing event, from car telemetry to camera feeds. Lenovo’s platforms play a crucial role in supporting these operations, processing approximately 600 TB of live data every race weekend. This data is then transmitted to Formula 1’s Media & Technology Centre (M&TC) in Biggin Hill, UK, where the latest cooling technology advancements are put to use.

The M&TC serves as the nerve center for Formula 1’s broadcast and data management operations. With support for over 180 software systems, the recently upgraded facility showcases the sport’s dedication to pushing broadcast boundaries while maintaining sustainability objectives.

Chris Roberts, Formula 1’s Director of IT, underscores the importance of Lenovo’s water-cooling technology in achieving these goals. By reducing energy consumption compared to traditional methods, Neptune technology not only supports F1’s operations but also contributes to the Net Zero target by 2030.

In collaboration with Lenovo, Formula 1 continues to enhance its operations to meet evolving technical demands while prioritizing sustainability. This commitment ensures a top-tier experience for fans while staying true to the sport’s core values.
