Jassy Addresses Concerns Over Layoffs at Amazon

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently discussed the company’s rapid growth and the impact it has had on its workforce. He highlighted the challenges that come with expanding quickly, such as increased layers of management and potential weakening of employee ownership over their work.

Employee Worries and Resentment

Former Amazon director Mohan Mulund, now managing director of investment firm Vangal, has been in contact with current AWS employees who are concerned about potential layoffs. Mulund explained that the issue stems from new hires in 2020 and 2021 being paid more than existing employees in similar roles, leading to resentment among long-time staff members.

Addressing Performance and Compensation

While Amazon is focusing on laying off employees based on performance, the higher salaries of some new hires mean that more highly compensated individuals may be impacted. Mulund emphasized that higher pay comes with higher expectations, resulting in a greater likelihood of layoffs affecting those with higher salaries. This approach aims to address the issue of resentment within the workforce.
