Neterra, a leading global provider of connectivity solutions, is investing €12 million to upgrade its Bulgarian backbone network. By leveraging cutting-edge technology from Infinera, a division of Nokia, the company aims to enhance the capacity and efficiency of its data transmission infrastructure.

The initiative is geared towards meeting the escalating data needs of local businesses and ensuring seamless international data transit across Bulgaria. Neterra’s network in Bulgaria utilizes DWDM technology, enabling the transmission of multiple “light channels” over a single pair of fiber optic strands.

The current network can support up to 200 Gigabits per channel, but with the upgrade, it will be capable of handling 800 Gigabits per channel, with the potential to scale up to 1.2 Terabits. This advancement significantly boosts the network’s data-carrying capacity.

In addition to increased capacity, the updated network offers enhanced flexibility. Through the use of ROADM devices, Neterra can now provision new services via software, eliminating the need for physical adjustments along the network. This streamlined approach reduces operational complexities and minimizes the risk of errors.

The initial phase of the project will focus on key routes in Western and Southern Bulgaria, such as Sofia – Ruse and Sofia – Plovdiv – Stara Zagora – Sliven – Kapitan Andreevo, with full operation expected within 3–4 months. Subsequent phases will extend the upgrades to Varna and Bourgas, further expanding the network’s coverage nationwide.

Installation will be carried out by Infinera’s trusted partners, with technical support from Neterra’s team to ensure a seamless implementation and service migration.
