Vertiv: Leading the Way in Apprenticeship Opportunities in Donegal and Derry

Vertiv has solidified its position as the top apprenticeship provider in the Donegal and Derry regions with its innovative apprenticeship programme. This initiative is playing a crucial role in addressing local skills shortages in electrical engineering and manufacturing, preparing candidates for roles that are traditionally hard to fill. At the same time, it is creating new avenues for young individuals to gain qualifications and practical experience in a rapidly growing industry.

Comprehensive Apprenticeship Pathways

The apprenticeship programme at Vertiv currently supports over 80 apprentices pursuing various pathways, including Level 3 Apprenticeships, Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher Level Apprenticeships, and Degree-level qualifications. Participants receive training in specialized areas such as switchgear and power systems, cooling technologies, and IT infrastructure – all essential components for maintaining the resilience and efficiency of data centers, telecommunications networks, and other critical industries. These programmes are developed in collaboration with North West Regional College (NWRC) and the University of Ulster, equipping young professionals with the technical skills and hands-on experience needed to tackle real-world challenges.

Emphasis on Accessibility

A key focus of the apprenticeship programme is accessibility. By adopting an “earn-as-you-learn” model, apprentices are employed during their training, receiving competitive wages and numerous opportunities for career advancement. These measures aim to eliminate barriers to entry, providing individuals from diverse backgrounds with the chance to build fulfilling careers.

Transforming Lives and Building a Stronger Workforce

Aidan Lynch, electrical and mechanical technical trainer at Vertiv in Campsie, Derry, NI, expressed, “Our apprenticeship programme is dedicated to empowering young adults for success and making a positive impact in the communities we serve. By addressing skills gaps and collaborating closely with local educational institutions, we are contributing to economic growth in Derry, Donegal, and beyond. We are committed to helping every apprentice develop the necessary skills, confidence, and experience to excel in their careers and contribute to a more robust, innovative workforce.”

The programme has already started to change lives. Cate O’Neill, an apprentice, shared, “This programme has been life-changing, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. I have gained invaluable skills and industry experience while working towards a qualification. The support I have received has truly made a difference.”

Future Expansion and Collaboration

Plans are underway to expand the programme further in the coming years, with Vertiv dedicated to strengthening partnerships with educational institutions, government agencies, and industry collaborators. These efforts will ensure that the programme continues to meet the evolving needs of the sector and business landscape, providing a pathway for the next generation of talent,” stated Philip O’Doherty, managing director at Vertiv Holdings.

Join the Vertiv Apprenticeship Programme

Vertiv encourages local organizations, educators, and aspiring apprentices to explore the opportunities available within the programme. By working together, the region can cultivate a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
