Expanding Opportunities in Italy: CyrusOne’s Latest Data Center Acquisition

In a strategic move, CyrusOne has recently acquired a 19.68-acre site located in Milan and Segrate, just 4 miles east of the city center and near Linate Airport.

CyrusOne is committed to benefiting the local community through the development of their new data center. Approximately 30% of the site will be dedicated to the Municipality, and the company is working closely with local authorities to enhance the surrounding area. The facility will feature landscaping, acoustic panels to reduce noise, and will be designed to distribute excess heat to local businesses in need.

Matt Pullen, EVP and Managing Director, Europe, at CyrusOne, expressed optimism about the opportunities in Italy. He highlighted the country’s strong industrial base, supportive environment for new industries, and robust power infrastructure. The new acquisition underscores CyrusOne’s dedication to providing modern infrastructure that creates jobs and benefits for the local community.

As part of the development, CyrusOne will be transferring land to TERNA to support the expansion of the Lambrate substation. This will ensure a reliable dual active power supply for the data center, with additional capacity available for local businesses. Sustainability is a key focus for CyrusOne, with plans for the data center to run on 100% renewable energy and achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ certification.

CyrusOne first entered the Italian market in December of last year with the acquisition of another site in Segrate. The MIL1 data center, set to deliver 27 megawatts of IT capacity, demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing advanced infrastructure in Italy.

Overall, CyrusOne’s expansion in Italy signifies a significant step towards meeting the growing demand for cloud and AI workloads, while also prioritizing sustainability and community development.
