Colt Data Centre Services to Expand Presence in Germany with Four New Data Centres

Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has unveiled plans to develop four state-of-the-art data centres in Germany, signaling a significant investment in the country’s digital infrastructure.

Details of the Expansion

The upcoming data centres, namely Frankfurt 4 & 5 and Berlin 1 & 2, will be strategically located to meet the growing demand for data storage and processing capabilities. The two Frankfurt facilities will be situated on an expansive 18-acre site, boasting a combined capacity of 63MW. On the other hand, the Berlin data centres will be built on a 9.5-acre site, offering a total IT capacity of 54MW.

Colt DCS aims to have the first phases of Frankfurt 4 and Berlin 1 operational by the end of 2028, with a focus on utilizing renewable energy sources. Once completed, these new data centres will add a remarkable 117MW to Colt DCS’ existing capacity in Germany, reaching a total of 176MW.

Commitment to Sustainability

Emphasizing its commitment to sustainability, Colt DCS will construct the new facilities in accordance with its Global Reference Design (GRD) principles. These designs are tailored to support a variety of workloads, including high-performance computing, with the ability to power racks up to 130kW. The cooling systems will incorporate innovative approaches such as direct liquid-to-chip cooling, ensuring energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Moreover, Colt DCS will implement various low embodied carbon practices during the construction phase, such as using low Global Warming Potential (GWP) cooling chillers and minimizing water waste for cooling purposes. The waste heat generated by the data centres will be repurposed for district heating, contributing to the overall sustainability of the local communities.

Community Impact and Innovation

The expansion of Colt DCS’ presence in Germany is not only a strategic business move but also a testament to the company’s dedication to fostering innovation and supporting local economies. By investing €2 billion in the development of these data centres, Colt DCS aims to bolster Germany’s position as a key player in the digital transformation landscape.

Gert-Uwe Mende, Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden, expressed his enthusiasm for Colt DCS’ decision to establish a data centre in the city, highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of businesses.

CEO’s Perspective

Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS, emphasized the growing demand for hyperscale data centres in Germany and the company’s role in meeting this need. He underscored Colt DCS’ dedication to sustainability and innovation, positioning the new data centres as a means to not only enhance capacity for cloud and AI workloads but also to drive positive change in the industry.

Overall, Colt DCS’ expansion in Germany signifies a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards advancing digital infrastructure and supporting the evolving needs of businesses in the region.
