Meta Expands Ads on Instagram Threads Worldwide
Meta has announced the global expansion of ads on its Instagram Threads app, allowing all eligible advertisers to reach over 320 million monthly active users. This move comes months after the initial testing of ads in select markets like the U.S. The expansion includes an inventory filter for advertisers to control the content sensitivity level next to which the ads will run.
The new ad placement within the Threads feed will be enabled by default for all new ad campaigns using Meta’s Advantage+ or Manual Placements. Advertisers on the Manual Placements plan will have the option to opt out of the Threads feed, providing more control over their ad placements.
Initially, the ads will only be delivered in select markets and will gradually roll out to more regions over time. Threads has been conducting ad tests in the U.S. and Japan up to this point.
Meta’s decision to expand ads on Threads indicates the company’s confidence in the platform’s ability to attract advertisers and compete against rivals like Elon Musk’s X. With three out of four Threads users already following at least one business on the app, Meta believes the platform is conducive to advertising.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg aims to reach over 1 billion people through Threads in the next few years, highlighting the network’s rapid growth with more than 1 million daily signups. The app leveraged its connection to Instagram to quickly onboard users, tapping into the existing friend graph of the social network.
In the midst of an antitrust trial with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Meta is defending its competitive edge built on owning major social networks. The outcome of the trial could potentially lead to Meta divesting Instagram and WhatsApp if the government’s case is successful.
To enhance Threads’ growth, Meta has incorporated elements from emerging social networks like Mastodon and Bluesky. Threads is integrating with the ActivityPub protocol, connecting it to the decentralized fediverse. This move could position Threads as a dominant player in the fediverse, surpassing Mastodon’s user base.
Additionally, Threads has adopted features from Bluesky, such as custom feeds and curated user recommendations. While Bluesky boasts over 35 million users, Threads users are presented with a default feed upon launching the app and lack moderation control options.
The fediverse currently has over 16 million users, excluding Threads, showcasing the platform’s potential for growth and expansion in the social media landscape.
