Apple Develops Specialized Chips for Future Hardware, Including Smart Glasses, AI Servers, and Macs

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Apple is intensifying its focus on in-house hardware development by working on a new generation of chips for upcoming devices.

The new processors are expected to power a range of products, including smart glasses, AI-capable servers, and the next iterations of Mac computers.

Smart Glasses with Custom Chips

Apple is reportedly designing a custom chip specifically for smart glasses. These glasses are anticipated to feature voice commands, photo capture, and audio playback functionalities. While they won’t be full augmented reality (AR) devices, the chip’s design is based on the low-power components found in the latest Apple Watch models, optimized for energy efficiency and multi-camera support.

Production for the glasses chip is rumored to commence by late 2026 or early 2027, with devices potentially hitting the market within two years. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is expected to handle the chip’s production, as with most of Apple’s chips.

Apple’s Vision for Smart Glasses

Sources suggest that Apple has been working on smart glasses for several years, aiming to create advanced AR wearables that overlay digital information onto real-world environments. While Meta has already launched smart glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban, Apple seems to be focusing on a similar product without full AR capabilities in its initial release.

Apple is allegedly developing both AR and non-AR glasses under the codename N401. CEO Tim Cook envisions Apple leading the market in this segment. Meta, on the other hand, plans to introduce a high-end fully AR glasses model by 2027.

AI-Powered Non-AR Glasses and Other Innovations

Apple’s non-AR glasses could leverage cameras and AI to offer user assistance, aligning with Meta’s strategy. The company is exploring features like cameras in AirPods and smartwatches, utilizing upcoming Apple chips. Camera-enabled Apple Watch (codenamed “Nevis”) and AirPods (codenamed “Glennie”) are expected to debut by 2027.

Furthermore, Apple is preparing new processors for Macs, including the M6 (Komodo), M7 (Borneo), and a high-end chip named “Sotra.” Upgrades for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro with the M5 chip are also in the pipeline for later this year.

Apple’s Hardware Strategy

Apple’s internal chip development aligns with its strategy to control the full hardware stack of its products. Led by Johny Srouji, the hardware group has been expanding its portfolio, with recent launches like the in-house modem chip for the iPhone 16e and plans for the C2 chip in 2026.

Stay tuned for more updates on Apple’s innovative hardware developments as they continue to shape the future of technology.
