BNP Paribas Expands Partnership with IBM Cloud
BNP Paribas is set to enhance its utilization of IBM Cloud, with plans to allocate a dedicated section of its data centers to the platform by 2028.
This development stems from a collaboration that commenced in 2019, wherein the bank began hosting IBM Cloud infrastructure within its facilities to bolster broader digital transformation initiatives.
The forthcoming investment aims to bolster system redundancy, enhance resilience in services like payment systems, fortify data security, and ensure compliance with regulations.
Part of BNP Paribas’ strategy aligns with the European Union’s Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), which sets forth stringent IT risk management and business continuity requirements for financial institutions. By fortifying its internal cloud infrastructure and exercising control over cloud service provider risk, BNP Paribas aims to meet standards more effectively.
BNP Paribas leverages various data centers, including eco-friendly facilities in Sweden and Iceland operated by atNorth. These locations cater to data-intensive workloads and high-performance computing. Additionally, the bank reportedly operates at least one data center in India.
Extending its collaboration with IBM grants BNP Paribas access to GPUs via IBM Cloud, enabling the testing and scaling of generative AI initiatives. These resources are intended to facilitate the exploration of new use cases and expedite the adoption of emerging technologies like AI.
The bank is transitioning towards cloud-native development through the utilization of Red Hat OpenShift, IBM’s Kubernetes-based container platform. By modernizing applications via microservices, BNP Paribas aims to enhance agility and support services capable of scaling across diverse banking operations, including payment systems.
Marc Camus, the Chief Information Officer at BNP Paribas, emphasized the bank’s focus on evolving its infrastructure while prioritizing security and regulatory compliance. “By combining GPUs as a service, a dedicated, state-of-the-art environment in our data centers, and a cloud-native infrastructure, we are strengthening our technological foundation,” Camus stated.
Furthermore, BNP Paribas disclosed plans to deploy Oracle’s Exadata Cloud@Customer for on-premises databases by the end of 2024. This move aims to enhance automation accessibility and reduce latency during the processing of sensitive data.
