Revolutionizing Biomaterials: Arda Biomaterials Secures $5.25M in Funding
Arda Biomaterials, a pioneering company based in London, UK, specializing in biomaterial technology utilizing plant proteins, has successfully raised $5.25 million in funding.
The funding round was led by Oyster Bay Venture Capital, with substantial contributions from Clean Growth Fund, Kadmos Capital, and Green Angel Ventures.
Under the leadership of CEO Brett Cotten and CTO Dr. TJ Mitchell, Arda focuses on developing innovative material applications using plant-based proteins, including leather-like materials and textiles. The company has harnessed technology that transforms waste grain from breweries and whisky production into unique materials, such as leather-like fabrics for the fashion and retail sectors, all without the use of animal products, rubber, or plastic.
Arda’s chemistry platform enables the manipulation of plant proteins to achieve two primary objectives: replacing plastics and replicating the structure of animal-based proteins found in silk, wool, feathers, leather, and other materials.
The company plans to utilize the funds to further advance its research and development initiatives, with a primary focus on their inaugural innovation – a groundbreaking leather-like material known as New GrainTM. This material is derived from the abundant waste barley proteins sourced from beer breweries and whisky distilleries, offering a sustainable and scalable solution.
Arda, currently establishing a new facility at Kernel Brewery in London, aims to make their products available to consumers on a limited scale by the end of this year.
