New investment in advanced technology research in New Zealand is set to drive innovation, boost exports, and create high-value jobs in the high-tech sector. Science, Innovation, and Technology Minister Dr. Shane Reti announced the $71 million investment in a new advanced technology science platform hosted by the Robinson Research Institute at Victoria University of Wellington. This funding aims to support breakthroughs in areas like cryogenic and quantum science, leading to advancements in health, transport, energy, and the space industry.

The government’s investment will not only enable the development of innovative products and services but also nurture young scientists into world-class innovators. The Robinson Research Institute, known for its expertise in superconductors, magnets, and materials technologies, will play a significant role in harnessing workforce capability through internships and postgraduate study. Additionally, the research platform will strengthen local and international research partnerships, attracting foreign investment in New Zealand’s research and development sector.

Dr. Reti emphasized the platform’s potential to grow and diversify the economy, support the development of top scientists and innovators, and create quality jobs for New Zealanders. This investment aligns with the government’s efforts to reform the science, innovation, and technology system, laying the foundation for the establishment of the new Advanced Technology Public Research Organization. By fostering collaboration between research and industry, this initiative is poised to drive economic growth and technological advancement in New Zealand’s high-tech sector.
