Signal Enhances Screen Security in Response to Microsoft’s Recall Feature

Signal is taking proactive measures to safeguard users’ secured chats from being captured through Microsoft’s Recall feature. The latest version of Signal for Windows 11 now includes default screen security, a DRM feature similar to what prevents users from taking screenshots of Netflix content. This move, while enhancing privacy, may pose challenges for individuals relying on accessibility tools like screen readers.

Easy Disabling Option, But Unnecessary Hassle

Although Signal has made it simple to disable the screen security feature under Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen Security, the need for such a workaround is questioned. Developer Joshua Lund emphasizes the importance of operating system vendors like Microsoft providing app developers with the necessary tools to protect sensitive information from OS-level AI systems.

Recall Feature Raises Privacy Concerns

Despite multiple delays, Microsoft recently introduced the Recall feature, allowing users to access archived content based on descriptions or topics. While this could aid in searching for specific information, such as emails or Signal chats, it also poses significant privacy and security risks. Lund highlights the need for app developers to have control over opting out sensitive content from AI-powered archives.

Microsoft’s existing filters for private browsing activities and limited options for Copilot Plus PC users to filter out certain apps highlight the importance of utilizing available tools, as acknowledged by Signal. While recognizing the legitimate need for taking screenshots, Signal remains committed to leveraging available resources to protect user privacy.
