In a recent announcement, Shell has introduced a cutting-edge direct liquid cooling (DLC) fluid, known as Shell DLC Fluid S3, tailored to meet the escalating thermal requirements of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads. This innovative product signifies Shell’s ongoing commitment to providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable cooling solutions for modern data center environments.

Shell DLC Fluid S3 is a specially formulated propylene glycol-based liquid that boasts superior thermal conductivity and broad compatibility with contemporary cooling hardware. It complements Shell’s existing range of immersion cooling products by offering a targeted approach to cooling essential components like CPUs and GPUs directly at the heat source.

As the demand for computing power continues to surge and server densities increase, traditional air-based cooling systems have become less effective. By facilitating the direct removal of heat from high-load chips, DLC technologies like Shell’s new fluid can significantly reduce the reliance on mechanical air conditioning systems. According to Shell, DLC Fluid S3 can improve power usage effectiveness (PUE) by up to 27% compared to conventional air cooling setups.

One of the distinguishing features of Shell DLC Fluid S3 is its adherence to the Open Compute Project PG25 coolant specifications, which are widely recognized industry standards governing compatibility, material safety, and performance. By employing a DLC approach that prevents the fluid from coming into direct contact with semiconductor surfaces, Shell ensures hardware warranties are preserved and system integrity is maintained over time.

In addition to its thermal management capabilities, Shell DLC Fluid S3 offers long-term corrosion protection across various metals commonly found in heat sinks and piping, such as copper, brass, aluminum, and steel. With an operational lifespan exceeding six years, this fluid surpasses the longevity of traditional inorganic acid-based coolants and provides enhanced freeze protection, leak detection features, and robust thermal transfer performance.

Aysun Akik, Vice President of New Business Development and Global Key Accounts at Shell Lubricants, emphasized the strategic significance of Shell DLC Fluid S3 for the future of digital infrastructure. With a global infrastructure that supports both direct-to-chip and immersion cooling options, Shell aims to deliver scalable, innovative cooling technologies that align with the sustainability and efficiency goals of enterprise customers. As data center operators reevaluate their cooling strategies amidst the growing demand for computing power, Shell’s new fluid represents a pivotal step towards addressing the evolving thermal management challenges in the industry.
