Powering Up: Hut 8 Supercharges Vega Data Center

Hut 8 Corp. recently announced the successful energization of Vega, a groundbreaking Bitcoin mining facility. Vega is set to become the largest single-building Bitcoin mining facility in terms of nameplate hashrate, covering an impressive 162,000 square feet and powered by 205 megawatts of energy capacity. When fully operational, Vega will support approximately 15 exahash per second of BITMAIN U3S21EXPH servers for Bitcoin mining ASIC compute, contributing nearly 2.0% to the current global Bitcoin network hashrate.

Vega introduces a new Tier I data center form that bridges the gap between traditional air-cooled ASIC infrastructure and liquid-cooled GPU infrastructure. Unlike conventional mining facilities, Vega incorporates a proprietary rack-based, direct-to-chip liquid cooling system developed by Hut 8, enabling high-density ASIC deployments of up to 180 kilowatts per rack.

The modular design of Vega, including pump skids, fluid distribution networks, and smart power distribution units, was meticulously crafted by Hut 8’s development team to enhance thermal efficiency, miner stability, and operational reliability. This innovative approach results in increased compute density, superior thermal management, and enhanced uptime, particularly in challenging environments like Texas.

Hut 8’s CEO, Asher Genoot, emphasized the company’s forward-thinking design philosophy, stating that Vega was engineered to evolve alongside the growing demands of the market. The project’s scalability and adaptability are evident in its performance under real-world conditions, showcasing its potential for future high-density liquid-cooled infrastructure to support emerging HPC workloads.

Furthermore, Vega’s design is tailored for AI training and other high-performance computing tasks, prioritizing speed, density, and cost efficiency over conventional redundancy standards. Jake Palmer, Senior Vice President of Development at Hut 8, highlighted the project’s significance in optimizing application-specific infrastructure for improved performance and cost-effectiveness.

BITMAIN has entered into an ASIC colocation agreement with Hut 8 for the full deployment at Vega, projected to generate substantial annual revenue based on ERCOT energy prices and facility uptime. The agreement also includes a purchase option allowing Hut 8 to acquire the hosted fleet, potentially expanding its self-mining capacity through American Bitcoin Corp.

Hut 8’s partnership with BITMAIN has led to the development of cutting-edge ASIC compute technology, setting a new industry benchmark for performance, efficiency, and design. Irene Gao, Vice President of Mining at BITMAIN, expressed confidence in the collaboration’s success and anticipated further advancements in the future.
